Natural Health Benefits of Honey

Honey is well-known across the globe, no matter the religion, culture, race or ethnicity. While some people may find it a necessary addition to their favorite meals or a healthier alternative to their favorite drinks, honey is also a well known remedy for numerous illnesses and discomforts distressing people around the world. Here are seven of the highly used honey remedies that are known not only to be effective but convenient as well:

1. A good go-to method to alleviate coughs and sore throat. Sore throat is bad enough as it is but when you’re constantly coughing and your throat feels constantly dry and itchy, it can be extremely uncomfortable. Fortunately, you don’t need to head directly to the pharmacy to alleviate the coughing and itchiness. You can just open your kitchen cupboard and find the perfect alternative to chemical-mediated medications. Studies have shown that honey can be just as effective to the known cough suppressant dextromethorphan. In fact, children ages 2 and older who are given 2 teaspoons of honey at bedtime have encountered relief of their upper respiratory tract infection symptoms. However, it is necessary to avoid giving children who are younger than 1 year old any honey whatsoever as it increases the risk of infant botulism, an atypical yet fatal type of food poisoning.

2. Helps decrease the symptoms of Rheumatoid Arthritis. Ask anyone suffering from arthritis and they’ll tell you just how much it can affect their job, their daily activities and their life in general. While there may be medications that can help alleviate the symptoms, honey can also help supplement the mechanism of action in order to achieve optimum effects. Simply take two teaspoons of honey in a daily basis. You can even add a teaspoon of cinnamon, which is also known to decrease the symptoms of Rheumatoid arthritis.

3. Helps people with high blood pressure. This is another one of the easy honey remedies you can do to decrease your blood pressure. Just mix a teaspoon of honey and five to ten drops of apple cider vinegar in a cup of hot water. Drink this mixture on a daily basis. Honey is believed to help remove the fat and cholesterol commonly embedded in the body’s tissues.

4. Manages oral ulcers. Just add a pinch of turmeric and a teaspoon of manuka honey together and apply directly on any sores and mouth ulcers on parts of your mouth and tongue. This helps the mouth secrete more saliva, thereby increasing the healing process. For those with internal ulcers, you can drink warm milk with a teaspoon of honey twice a day.

5. Helps relieve chronic fever. If you’ve had a fever for quite some time without any hopes of decreasing your temperature with the usual antipyretic medications, honey can help. All you have to do is make a holy basil (tulsi) tea and add one teaspoon of honey and ¼ teaspoon of black pepper powder. Drink the concoction two to three times daily.

6.  Stops hiccups. Combine a teaspoon of castor oil and a teaspoon of honey in a clean container. Dip your finger in the mixture and lick your finger. Continue licking every 10 minutes until your hiccup stops. Honey and castor oil are known to be anti-spasmodics and hiccups are believed to be caused by the spasm of the diaphragm.

7. Promotes Blood Circulation. Combine ¼ teaspoon of trikatu, 1 teaspoon of cinnamon and 1 teaspoon of honey in a cup of hot water. Allow it to steep for 10 minutes and drink twice a day.

There are literally hundreds of different illnesses that honey can treat. With these honey remedies, solution can be a kitchen cupboard away.
